What to expect in therapy
Parents and guardians, please feel free to go through this page with your child to help prepare them for starting therapy. Many kids feel nervous when going to new places or meeting new people and it can be helpful to talk to them about it before the first appointment.
The first session is to get to know you. You and your parent or guardian will be asked different questions about things like school, family, friends, and hobbies. It is normal to feel shy or nervous when you meet your therapist for the first time.
The second session is to make goals for therapy. Not exactly sure what you want to work on in therapy? That's ok! Your therapist will help you think about this and create a plan for working together.
Your therapist will help you work on your goals. During sessions, you and your therapist may do activities related to your therapy goals, learn and practice new skills, or just talk about what is on your mind.
What's said in session stays in session. What you talk about in therapy is always kept private-even from your parents. The only time your therapist has to say something to another adult is if there is a worry that someone is hurting you, you are going to hurt yourself, or you want to hurt someone else. If something comes up in session that would be good for another adult to know, we will talk about this first and make a plan together on how to share this information.
Your therapist wants you to feel better. Open and honest communication during therapy is encouraged. Feel free to let your therapist know if something is confusing, not quite working, or if we got something wrong. We are here to help you feel your best and want you to be in charge of your healing.
